What is Ascending Mass Technology?
In another topic we talked about what a ‘flighted’ set of golf shafts is, and today we’re going to dive into the idea of an Ascending Mass Technology set of golf shafts. These shafts, like the True Temper AMT series of golf shafts, are almost the opposite of the idea of a flighted set. Instead of changing the flex and kick-point characteristics of the set as you move down, you’re actually changing the weight of the golf shafts themselves, hence: Ascending Mass Technology. With the help of our sponsors at True Temper Golf and their AMT series of iron shafts, we’ll dive in and break down the concept of Ascending Mass Technology.
Ascending Mass Technology, or AMT, as a concept has been around forever. The same reason most golfers play lighter to heavier shafts from their driver to their hybrids, or play heavier shafts in their wedges than their irons is why AMT iron shaft sets were developed.
AMT is based around the idea of making each individual more playable as you move down the set from the long irons into the short irons. As you get into shorter scoring clubs AMT shafts increase in weight. This additional weight also allows for a slow taper in swingweight, which helps optimize your entire set. By having more physical weight in the shaft, and a higher swingweight, those scoring clubs become more able to be controlled, resulting in more scoring chances on the putting surface. Conversely, the AMT concept helps golfers hit their longer irons better by allowing them to swing them a little bit faster, taking advantage of the lower loft of those clubs while helping to get the ball up in the air. Every golfer understands the confidence that you get from pureing a long iron, and the concept of AMT shafts just reaffirms it.
You can also apply this concept to a custom set of irons if you choose to do so. With products like the AeroTech Steelfiber series of golf shafts, you could have a custom set built with heavier shafts in the scoring clubs, and lighter options in the longer irons. It may seem a little overkill to build a set this way, but the possible advantages could make a big difference! It’s the same concept as what almost every golfer does with their woods. Their driver is the lightest shaft in their bag, but by the time they get down to their hybrids, they have significantly heavier shafts; sometimes a difference of more than 30 grams of raw weight! Which may make you take a double take and think “why wouldn’t we do that with our irons too?”
