What is
‘Shaft Kick Point’?
In golf, the "kick point" of a shaft refers to the position on the shaft where it bends or flexes the most during the golf swing. It is also known as the "flex point" or "bend point." The kick point affects the trajectory and launch angle of the golf ball, as well as the overall feel and performance of the club. The kick point is determined by the design and construction of the golf shaft. Different shafts have different kick points, and they can be classified as having a low, mid, or high kick point. With some help from our sponsor True Temper, we’ll break down how it may be affecting your game.
High Kick Point
A high kick point shaft, like the Dynamic Gold, flexes closer to the grip end of the club. This design promotes a lower ball flight and is generally preferred by golfers with a faster swing speed who want to reduce the spin and launch angle to achieve more control and distance.
Mid Kick Point
A mid kick point shaft, like the Dynamic Gold Mid, flexes in the middle section of the shaft. It offers a balance between control and trajectory, making it a versatile option suitable for a wide range of golfers.
Low Kick Point
A lower kick point shaft bends or flexes closer to the club head, like the AMT Red series. This type of shaft promotes a higher ball flight and is generally more suitable for golfers with a slower swing speed or golfers at any speed who need help getting the ball airborne.
Kick Point v Profile
The kick point also has a direct relationship with the profile of the golf shaft, since the profile of the shaft is usually designed around what sort of kick point the manufacturer is trying to achieve. As they develop a profile they are keeping the desired kick-point in mind which helps to streamline the engineering and prototyping process by focusing solely on characteristics that will help achieve that desired kick point.
As the stiffness of different sections is manipulated the kick point will move up and down the shaft until it’s located in its desired final location combined with the desired feel and launch characteristics of that shaft. These differences will react differently for different players and allow a golfer to truly dial in their set.
