Should you play the same
Shaft Profile
in your driver and fairways?
Understanding the profile of your golf shafts can make a large difference in your ability to unlock the potential of those shafts and the clubs that they are in. Shaft profiles are individually optimized characteristics for individual golfers that allow that shaft to be used to its full potential. In this topic, we’ll talk about the differences in why you may or may not play the same shaft profile between your driver and your fairway woods. Our sponsors at True Temper have provided us with a HZRDUS Green Smoke RDX and HZRDUS Blue Smoke RDX to demonstrate today’s topic.
Lots of golfers get fit in some way shape or form for their driver, but not for their fairways. A majority of the time a golfer will choose their fairway based off of the fit from their driver. And while that data can certainly be helpful, it may not be the definitive basis for deciding what fairway wood to purchase. You use your fairway woods very differently than your driver. Even golfers who typically find themselves using their fairway woods off the tee could need different components to optimize that club for their game.
Consider Launch:
One of the most important considerations when deciding what shaft profile to play in your fairway wood is launch. This is especially important for golfers who use their fairway woods off the turf consistently. When using a fairway wood off the tee you’ll typically see a neutral to upward attack angle at impact, but using a fairway wood off the turf may see a negative attack angle that creates a divot. These two very different club paths require different tools to optimize that fairway wood which is why it’s so important to think about how you use your fairway wood during the course of a round.
Changing Profiles
If you find yourself using a fairway wood off the tee as much as you may be using your driver, then having the same profile shaft may provide a level of familiarity that makes you feel more confident behind the ball. If you find yourself playing your fairway wood off the turf consistently then you may find yourself wanting a profile that promotes a little bit more launch and spin to help get that ball off the turf.
